We treat the patient
not the x-ray
Our Philosophy at SAOS
Part of our philosophy here at San Antonio Orthopaedic Specialists is that we take care of the patient, not just imaging studies, bad hips, knees, or shoulders!
our vision

through the full range of orthopaedic care.
What Dr. Harris has to Say about why we treat the Patient and not the X-ray
Dr. Harris, MD, FAAOS: “Part of our job as physicians is determining where the problem is because if we address where the pain is, we don't always fix the problem. At the same time, there's not always a perfect match between imaging and symptoms. Our surgeons don't treat the X-ray because we can't see pain, disability, or physical impairment on an X-ray. We treat the patient.”
Refer to 00.48s in the video above for a visual representation and example that Dr. Harris walks you through regarding a hip injury and the screening process he goes through to decide whether or not the injury requires surgery.”
Our Mission as Orthopaedic Surgeons
It's our job, as orthopedic surgeons, to help balance what you find on the imaging with what the patient's problems might be. A common problem with a knee MRI, for example, is that the first item listed will be a masseur-rated torn or displaced meniscal tear. That's a problem.
We try to match what we find in the imaging study to what we find on the exam of the patient. Our main objective is to find out why an individual patient has pain in a specific area. If it's a cartilage tear, treat that. If it's arthritis, treat that. If it’s back pain, we'll treat that.
The goal is for the treatment to match the patient. The imaging helps and when the imaging, symptoms, and findings match then you have the proper diagnosis and receive the needed treatment.
You deserve unparalleled
orthopaedic care.
