What is knee revision Surgery?

Revision knee replacement surgery is a procedure designed to correct an existing knee replacement that has failed or is causing pain, stiffness, or instability. During this procedure, one of our surgeons will remove the old implant, clean up the bone and tissue around the area, and then insert a new implant — ultimately restoring the mobility and quality of life of the patient.

When should a knee replacement be revised?

  • If the existing knee implant becomes loose.

  • If an infection is present in or around the knee joint.

  • If there is damage to the bone or soft tissues surrounding the implant.

  • If an excessively large range of motion is present in the knee joint.

  • If there is pain and/or stiffness after the original implant surgery.

  • If component failure occurs due to wearing, fatigue, or loosening of the implant components.

  • If it is determined that a different type of implant would be better to provide optimal function and pain relief for the patient.

Benefits of Revision knee surgery

Revision knee replacement can provide a range of benefits, including increased mobility, improved pain relief, reduced stress on the joint and surrounding tissue, improved stability, and better quality of life. Patients who undergo revision knee replacement can expect to have an improved range of motion and less pain in the joint area.

Who Is a Candidate for Revision Knee Replacement?

Revision knee replacement might be an option for patients who have an existing knee replacement that has failed or is causing pain, stiffness, or instability. The procedure is not suitable for patients with certain conditions, including infection, trauma, or avascular necrosis. A consultation with one of our orthopedic surgeons is needed to determine if revision knee replacement is the best option to provide relief from pain.
