Why See an Orthopaedic Specialist?

“A lot of patients are afraid to come to the doctor. And, I can certainly share that concern.”

- Dr. Stryker

We understand the drudgery of visiting the doctor: time, money, diagnosis, and treatments. However, not visiting a doctor, even more so, a specialist, means that you are in pain and bound by limitations. That pain and those limitations take time away from the things and people you love.

Taking the time to visit your doctor, or primary care physician is a great first step. However, if you are experiencing continued pain, stiffness, or soreness in your muscles, nerves, bones, joints, and tendons then visiting an orthopedic specialist is a better investment, saving you time and money in the long run.

Signs you need to see an orthopedic specialist

  • Chronic pain in the joints and bones, particularly in places such as the neck, knee, elbows, and/or back

  • Stiffness and reduction in range of motion in joints

  • Inability to perform everyday tasks as a result of these symptoms

  • You have suffered a soft tissue injury that has not improved in 48 hours

  • You experience instability while walking or standing

Many assume that the only reason to visit an orthopedic surgeon (specialist) is for surgery, but that's simply not the case. Orthopedic doctors specialize in the musculoskeletal system: the muscles, nerves, bones, joints, and connective tissues. They see patients with a variety of conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, osteoporosis, tumors, pain (such as knee pain, hip pain, joint pain, and muscle pain).

"So much of what we do is try and avoid operations. [Instead], we provide treatment modalities, anti-inflammatories, physical therapy, injections, and even just education.

Education sometimes helps patients get back to doing the things that they want to be doing without the pain that kept them from doing it before without the need for surgery."

Being in pain, having a limited range of motion, and feeling stiff can become part of everyday life. When that way of life impedes the performance of everyday tasks, like reaching into a cabinet, bending over, or even getting out of bed and using the bathroom—it’s time to see a doctor.

Here at San Antonio Orthopædic Specialists, we will discuss your symptoms with you to diagnose the cause of your pain and prepare a treatment plan that works for you. We are a patient-focused practice committed to providing you the care and attention you deserve.
