Common Causes of Hip Pain

What is Hip Pain?

Hip pain is something that most people experience. It can be a result of a sports injury, an accident, or even just daily activities. This pain can alter a person’s quality of life if not treated properly. Depending on where a person is feeling the hip pain may be a clue as to what the cause may be.

If you’re experiencing hip pain and discomfort, it’s important to visit with an orthopedic specialist!

Some of the most common causes of hip pain include:

  • Hip Arthritis

  • Hip Fractures

  • Hip Strains

  • Dislocated Hip

  • Labral Tear

  • Bursitis

What is Hip Arthritis?

Arthritis is one of the most common causes of hip pain. This is when the cartilage cushion is worn down over-time causing bone-on-bone friction.

The hip is a ball and socket joint, this is what allows the leg to move forward, backward, and side-to-side. When the cartilage between the ball (femur) and the socket (acetabulum) is not there, the bone surfaces grind together and become rough. This is what causes the pain and creates restrictive movement.

Is Hip Replacement Surgery A Solution To Hip Arthritis?

Yes! - At the point of end stage arthritis, this is the treatment we recommend.

During a hip replacement, we will make a resection on the bone and we remove the ball because it is diseased with arthritis. The ball is no longer perfectly round and is no longer functional. Once that gets removed, we add artificial parts that replace that bearing surface with a new ball and a new socket.

An In-Depth Look at Hip arthritis & a hip Replacement

Video [00.38 seconds]: “You can see in the X-ray here, this is someone that's had both sides replaced, but the white material on the X-ray that you see is actually the artificial implant. It sits inside the thigh bone with a new ball and then you've got a new artificial socket there that makes up the new bearing surface. When you remove those painful bone ends and remove them and now you've got artificial surfaces that move freely, that pain from the arthritis is gone.”
