Valgus knees vs varus knees

Dr. Broome quickly dives into the differences of valgus and varus knees and what they are!

So varus and valgus knees are really descriptions of the alignment of your legs. Our legs were meant to be straight yet some people may have varus knees or valgus knees. Let’s discuss the differences!

VARUS KNEES

With the varus knee, the legs are bowed outward. So these are patients that will walk with their knees pointed slightly outward.

VALGUS KNEES

Valgus knees are the opposite where the legs bow outward with the knees pointing in. It’s commonly referred to as being knock knees because when they walk their knees can brush against each other together and knock.

Why Does Proper Alignment Matter?

Proper leg alignment plays a crucial role in how we move and carry our body weight. Misalignments like varus and valgus knees can lead to increased stress on certain parts of the knee joint. Over time, this can contribute to discomfort, pain, and even the development of osteoarthritis. It's not just about aesthetics; it's about the overall health and functionality of your joints.
